Morning all:
Hello from the hustling metropolis of Hudsonville. Actually it’s just a tad slower than normal this Thanksgiving weekend due to the area’s first “winter wonderland” weekend. The descriptor of “metropolis” is coming a bit into question though since we’ve criss-crossed the area looking for a downtown without success. A few times I did think we’d found it but it turned out to be just another turkey farm. But, then when I reflect on my own city and its large city hall it really is not much different, it too is just a turkey farm.
My morning coffee is a true state-of-the-art kick start, having been brewed in a NASA styled Bodum brewer, so let’s get started. Our Michigan Thanksgiving was just wonderful, as the sisters made the meal a group effort. Though for Marcia and me the highlight was an opportunity to talk with Adrianne in Tonga. It was one of those fun calls where the phone was passing all around and Adrianne got to chat with uncles, aunts, and cousins. The nearly ten inches of snow that blew in Wednesday evening gave that very special touch to the day, complete with watching deer stroll through the back yard. Thanks for the hospitality Donn and Marlene.
Last night proved to be a great find. We all went to dinner at a place that until recently was just an old barn. Coming from different directions we all found the place even though there is no sign announcing what it is. I was delighted to discover I could actually get one of my favorite comfort foods—a Yoopie Pasty! I told the assembled masses that I would order it without glitter or tassles.
As we finished the evening’s band kicked in. What a find! We were treated to a great evening of Blues music. The band, Doug Deming and the Jewel Tones, were supposed to be accompanied by the nation’s best harmonica player, “fingers” Taylor. Due to illness we had a substitute who was absolutely phenomenal. Wonderfully impressive guitar and harmonica sounds—what a treat. Marcia even discovered that they’ll be in the “Nati in February, playing at a place only about five minutes from our home, I’ll adjust my travel schedule as soon as I get home.
OK, now its time to once again turn this into a lazy weekend. I realize that doing so requires energy, but hey, once in a while one just has to put forth.
Happy Thanksgiving everyone, may you all enjoy this time with friends, family, and loved ones. And for those traveling, be safe.
Have a great week.
Cheers,
Dirk
